2D platformers are one of the most popular game formats in the industry. Since it is such a saturated market, by focusing heavily on coding or mechanics, coherent visual design and player experience is often neglected.

The challenge lies in bridging the gap between design intent and player experience—from conceptual art to a fully functional prototype. This includes professional game design (hero and enemy designs, environment tiles, interactable objects, mood boards, and a visual pitch deck) and game development (movement, physics, and user interface elements).

THE AUDIENCE

Sweet Spell is catered for all those who love witchy, relaxing, puzzle games and charmingly funny side dialogue. The game is built for keyboard and PC, but the explore and interact functionality of the game easily has potential to be translated to console devices.

Sweet Spell Solution

The solution is to create a visually cohesive, engaging, and playable 2D platformer that successfully integrates art direction, gameplay flow, and interactive feedback.

The resulting game blends animation and physics into a polished, interactive prototype with distinct personality and replay value.

NARRATIVE

Nea is an alchemist that lost her practicing license due to improper use and distribution. Secretly, Nea has opened an undercover ice-cream business to provide her services.

Suspicious Customer

A mysterious customer who seems to know more than they let on. Always lurking around, they have a knack for appearing when least expected.

Raisin

Raisin

A play on the flavour "Rum & Raisin", Raisin is Nea's grandfather. Notorious sweet-tooth who misplaces his dentures and loves helping his grand-daughter.

Merman

Merman

An abnormal mermaid who is a freeloader in Nea's house. Great conversationalist, very clean and keeper of the pearls.

LEVEL & OBSTACLE DESIGN

The game starts with a customer placing an ice-cream order. The aim of the game is to navigate through Nea's witchy house and solve puzzles to receive the ingredients needed for the dessert. Once all the ingredients are obtained the player will craft the "Sweet Spell" and successfully complete the game.

Witch Word

Gameplay:

A cross-word puzzle hidden in Nea's cauldron. By using the hint for the theme, the user can drag the letters to form the words. By completing the puzzle you retrieve the heart ingredient.

Grandpa's Dentures

Gameplay:

By clicking on the candy bowl displayed, you obtain "Sweets of Celebration". When giving the toffee to Raisin you retrieve his dentures as "A gift from the elderly".

Toxic Tiles

Gameplay:

A rotation block puzzle. By aligning and connecting the acid pipe system, the user completes the game and retrieves a bottle of poison.

Skull Code

Gameplay:

The user is prompted to go to the attic to switch on the light and find a code. The user heads down to the basement to initiate the skeleton game. By using the instruction grid as a reference, tap in the code seen in the attic. If the user has successfully punched in the code, they will receive the "Skull of the Dead".

Pearl Platform

Gameplay:

The user is prompted to go up to Merman and initiate his game. The user must jump on the sponges, ride the rubber ducks, and avoid the hooks. The player must reach to the end of the platformer to receive the 'Pearl of Promise'.
