Visual storytelling has become a crucial element of artistic identity and allowing audiences to engage with the content. Without it, artists risk lower streaming figures and disinterest.

THE BRIEF

DSK Brief

The brief was to produce a visually engaging and responsive music video for DSK from Francois van Coke's album Ruimte.

The music video should reflect the mood and message of the song and a style that aligns with the artist's aesthetic and the alternative rock genre.

THE AUDIENCE

The audience for DSK are young adults in South Africa who appreciate the Afrikaans-Rock genre, deep narratives and dynamic animation.

THE SOLUTION

DSK Solution

DSK possesses a descriptive narrative, emphasis on vivid imagery and sensory details. The lyrics highlights the conflict and rebellion regarding Francois van Coke's personal beliefs in his youth.

Through power metaphors and captivating, dynamic visuals, the outcome will be an emotionally charged music video that deepens the audience's connection to the artist's work and increases the song's streaming analytics and popularity.

DSK Narrative Visual

NARRATIVE

The setting's establishing shot is Francois, in a hospital patient's gown, waking up in a hospital bed. The more Francois explores the hospital, the more he gets flashbacks from his childhood and the "medicine" he took he finds that the staff, nurses and doctors, are all undead and monsters who want to "cure" him from his rebellion. Francois' motive is to escape from the hospital and avoid being operated on—from being "turned". 'Die Gevaar' rescues Francois in a liberating moment of choice and freedom to be true to oneself.

VISUAL DIRECTION

The music video is narrative based and lyrics paralleling hospital terminology and visual metaphors.
